While Integrated Connector Modules (ICMs or MagJacks) offer plug-and-play ease, they introduce mechanical vulnerabilities, high replacement costs, and fixed board footprints.
Ethernet standards (such as IEEE 802.3) require galvanic isolation to protect equipment and operators from high voltages. When utilizing a raw RJ45 socket without internal magnetic transformers, the isolation is handled by discrete magnetic transformers placed downstream on the PCB. This configuration allows designers to select transformers with specific turns ratios, voltage ratings, and common-mode chokes that match their selected PHY chipsets.
